There has been quite a social media battle being waged on the world wide web for quite some time. I myself must admit that I occasionally stop by the Facebook page of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. Now before my few followers jump ship, please let me make my point. (and thanks for the follows by the way, and enjoy my new blog)
I look at the Mom's page not because I agree with anything that they stand for or say, but in all honesty to get a good laugh. Texas has long gun open carry, and there are many people in Texas that want to bring back open carry for handguns. To exercise their rights they go on family oriented walks to talk to people that come up to them. Some have been known to pass out pocket US Constitutions. What can be more american than that!
Now in my opinion, advertising to members on a website to call emergency response or 911, to report a law abiding and perfectly legal activity, seems like an expensive form of harassment. And sadly it comes at a cost to all taxpayers. I personally would group it in the same category of the IRS targeting that is under investigation. Just because someone decides to open carry, does not mean that they intend to harm anyone. Just the opposite, I am sure they would be willing to put their own lives in harms way to protect the innocent.
Here we have another post that shows the mentality in my opinion of its members. FBI reports prove when firearm ownership goes up, crime rates drop. To me the explanation is a no brainer, criminals want easy victims, unarmed victims. I would like to quote the Supreme Court, as cited from the Heller case.
Likewise, in State v. Chandler, 5 La. Ann. 489, 490 (1850), the Louisiana Supreme Court held that citizens had a right to carry arms openly: “This is the right guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States, and which is calculated to incite men to a manly and noble defence of themselves, if necessary, and of their country, without any tendency to secret advantages and unmanly assassinations.”” – US Supreme Court – District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570 (2008)
People have been openly carrying their firearms since this country was founded. So to say that open carry is not normal, tends to once again show the mentality of the people calling police when there is no laws being broken. I would hate for resources to be used on one of these bogus calls, when others may be in need.
